Spare a minute
to think
of the young who didn't grow up,
and how young they looked when they died,
and how no one will ever remember them looking tired and middle-aged
or even be bored by tiresome recitals of the time of their youth.

- - - - Russell Baker "How to Observe Dec. 7" (NY Times, Dec. 1965)

So they will not be "Forgot"
There is a word
Which bears a sword
Can pierce an armed man.
It hurls its barbed syllables,
And is mute again.
But where it fell
The saved will tell
On patriotic day,
Some epauletted brother
Gave his breath away.
Wherever runs the breathless sun,
Wherever roams the day,
There is its noiseless onset,
There is its victory!
Behold the keenest marksman!
The most accomplished shot!
Time’s sublimest target
Is a soul “forgot”!

----- Emily Dickinson

The temporary U. S. Military Cemetery at Foy, Belgium received Unknowns who have never yet been identified. This web page lists those whose files I have and gives a summary of the information for each. The columns are:

  1. Case: The Foy X-number assigned to the case of the recovered unknown remains.
  2. PDF Page: The page in the PDF file of the X-file for the case that contains the initial Report of Burial or Report of Interment. Click here for the PDF files of all Foy X-files, as well as the burial roster and cross-reference files.
  3. Recovery/First Burial: This is the date either of the recovery in the Recovery checklist or else the date of first burial (or date of the Report of Burial of the first burial it is earlier than the burial date).
  4. Redesig: An X or a blank to indicate the presence or absence, respectively, of re-designation of the case number for this case. For Foy, none of the cases were re-designated, but at other cemeteries such as St. Avold, cases were received from other cemeteries as they were closed down and consolidated, and these were sometimes given new case numbers at the receiving cemetery.
  5. Notes: Miscellaneous notes from or related to the case file, usually starting with the "Place of Death" field from the Report of Burial or from other documents in the X-file.

Still-Unidentified Unknowns Recovered for Burial at Temporary U. S. Military Cemetery at Foy, Belgium
Click on the X-number to view the file.
Many of these are from a list and not from the X-files, so that most do not have X-files yet posted to be able to see them.
They may have been identified after the undated document (PDF "File Charged 2 Mem Div") in which they were listed.

Cross-Reference Identifications of Unknowns Recovered for Burial at Temporary U. S. Military Cemetery at Foy, Belgium

The following table gathers the information from all Foy cross-reference identification sheets and burial rosters.

I have NOT yet added these entries to the main ETO Unknowns web page, although some of them may be there via other records.

Clearly, the cross-reference sheets fail to include all accounted Foy Unknowns. The main ETO Unknowns web page includes references to some of those other Foy X-numbers, sometimes with identification and sometimes without identification. Those are NOT included on this web page, since this web page includes only references in the surviving Foy-specific records.
