Spare a minute
to think
of the young who didn't grow up,
and how young they looked when they died,
and how no one will ever remember them looking tired and middle-aged
or even be bored by tiresome recitals of the time of their youth.

- - - - Russell Baker "How to Observe Dec. 7" (NY Times, Dec. 1965)

The June 30, 1947 list of Division Trains battle deaths compiled by the Adjutant General contains Gaszano F. Perrone (which mis-spelled his first name, which was actually Gaetano) and Carl W. Rutkowski. I later learned that Lester A. Welch was a non-battle death, and I have added him. There may be more names that belong on this list.

See the white box just below for how you can let me know about any errors you find.

You can also check for individual names at the following government web sites:

  • American Battle Monuments Commission World War II Honor Roll (those buried overseas in ABMC cemeteries)
  • National World War II Memorial Registry (includes ABMC information and more)
  • VA Nationwide Gravesite Locator (those buried in the US in national cemeteries)
  • National Archives WWII Enlistement Database (incomplete database of millions of enlistment records)
The National Archives site is very difficult to navigate. (1) Choose "World War, 1939-1945" in the subject and click SUBMIT. (2) Then click on "World War II Army Enlistment Records". (3) Then click on SELECT. (4) Then click on the SELECT next to "Enlistment Records". (5) Then scroll down to enter search information, and click on SEARCH. (6) To see the detail on a record found by the search, (6a) click in the box to the left of the line with that search result, to place an X in the box; then (6b) click SHOW SELECTED RECORDS.
  • National Archives WWII Prisoner of War Database (incomplete database of thousands of POW records)
The National Archives site is very difficult to navigate. (1) Choose "World War, 1939-1945" in the subject and click SUBMIT. (2) Then click on "Records of World War II Prisoners of War". So they will not be “Forgot”
    There is a word
    Which bears a sword
    It hurls its barbed syllables,-
    At once is mute again.
    But where it fell
    The saved will tell
    On patriotic day,
    Some epauletted brother
    Gave his breath away.
    Wherever runs the breathless sun,
    Wherever roams the day,
    There is its noiseless onset,
    There is its victory!
    Behold the keenest marksman!
    The most accomplished shot!
    Time’s sublimest target
    Is a soul “forgot”!
    ----- Emily Dickinson
