The following information is from information received from the anonymous donor and from what I know about 9th Armored Group's role in Headquarters of Combat Command R, 7th Armored Division.

Frederick Charles Stoddard was originally assigned to the separate (non-divisional) 748th Tank Battalion, which was an element of the 9th Tank Group, redesignated in 1942 as the 9th Armored Group. On 10 Jan 1945, Detachment "A" of 9th Armored Group was formed, including him (as "Tec 5 William G. Stoddard") along with 67 other enlisted men and officers. Detachment "A" remained in existence until 22 Apr 1945 when it was reabsorbed into 9th Armored Group. But for all practical purposes (including wearing the 7th Armored Division patch), they had become part of Headquarters of 7AD's Combat Command "R" (Reserve) in order to bring the previously smaller CCR up to full strength equal to CCA and CCB. Even after 22 Apr 1945 however, the documents show that Stoddard was with CCR/7AD, and the Morning Report summary in the history of 9th Armored Group shows them at the same places as CCR. So, it is not really clear what impact the 22 Apr 1945 had on the men of Detachment "A" in practical terms.

Thus Stoddard's photos prior to 1945 were with 9th Armored Group and not 7th Armored Division. But all the 1945 photos and documents were with 7th Armored Division. In particular, all of the photos in France are from 1944 and thus not photos of 7th Armored Division.

These images came from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. I am not clear just how they came to be in the state that they are. Clearly, they need work to put them into chronological order. As I understand it, they were in a scrapbook that was sold by a family member to someone who then took the photos and documents out of the scrapbook and sold them separately, thus losing the (presumably chronological) order in which they appeared in the scrapbook. I also have no idea if there were more photos and documents than what are included here.
